ACT’s Past Landscapes: Swampy Meadows Walking Tour

  • Yarralumla Equestrian Park 208 Cotter Road Weston, ACT, 2611 Australia (map)

Come join Tony Barham, geo-archaeologist from Navin Officer Heritage Consultants Pty Ltd, on a walk along the creek at Yarralumla to investigate how archaeologists use the current landscape to understand past environments. Tony will explore the once prominent landscape, Swampy Meadows which are marshy environments and disconnected “chain-of-ponds” habitats. These were prominent in the ACT prior to European occupation and were part of a rich and diverse ecosystem used by First Nations Australians. Swampy Meadows are now rare in the ACT as a result of stocking and clearing but can be seen in the soil profiles along the Yarralumla creek.

Tony will show how evidence of past landscapes is preserved in the valley floors and creek side deposits in the precinct. This analysis contributes to our knowledge of the past and how humans lived with the local environment.

Presented by the Canberra Archaeological Society.

This is a COVID19 safe event. The walk is along a track with some uneven terrain. There are gently sloping to moderately steep slopes. Not suitable for wheel chairs. Wear good walking shoes and a hat and bring water. No toilet available. Water is provided if needed.
