Archaeological Heritage Local and Global: An Introduction to ICOMOS

Presented in partnership with Australia ICOMOS.

ICOMOS, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, is a leading global organisation of cross-disciplinary heritage professionals, and an official advisory body to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. ICOMOS develops and promotes guidelines and resources for best-practice cultural heritage management, including the Australian Burra Charter (the Australia ICOMOS Charter for Places of Cultural Significance 2013). This webinar will introduce Australia ICOMOS, the Burra Charter and its Archaeological Management Practice Note, then outline the diverse roles and activities of ICOMOS, including the International Committee for Archaeological Heritage Management. Finally, participants will be briefed about the global General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of ICOMOS which will be hosted in Sydney in August/September 2023.

About the presenters:

  • Dr Andrew Sneddon is a Director of Extent Heritage who was awarded a PhD (Archaeology) from La Trobe University in 2001. He is a specialist in the field of heritage law, and has extensive hands on experience in heritage management. Andrew is the Treasurer of Australia ICOMOS.

  • Prof Richard Mackay, AM has directed many large historical archaeological projects and published widely on archaeological heritage management.  Richard is an Adjunct Professor at Deakin University, and an ICOMOS World Heritage Adviser, member of the Australia ICOMOS Executive Committee, and the Convenor of the 2023 ICOMOS General Assembly and Scientific Symposium.

  • Prof Tracy Ireland is Director of the Centre for Creative and Cultural Research at the University of Canberra, and President of Australia ICOMOS. Tracy was awarded a PhD (Archaeology) from the University of Sydney in 2002, and is known internationally for her research on heritage practice, and the relationships between archaeology, conservation and heritage in the postcolonial world.
