Archaeology at Toowong Cemetery

  • Toowong Cemetery Frederick Street and Mount Coot-Tha Road Australia (map)

Be the first to see artefacts from Brisbane’s past. The Friends of Toowong Cemetery will be on hand to help identify your discovery and unveil the story behind the stones.

Toowong Cemetery runs yearly excavations as part of National Archaeology Week. These excavations are designed to recover buried headstones from the North Brisbane Burial Grounds (1843-1875), which is now home to Suncorp Stadium.

On Saturday 22 May, families and residents are encouraged to attend from 9am to be a part of the dig and perhaps make a fascinating discovery.

Requirements: Bring a hat, some sturdy shoes, a water bottle and a set of gloves, not to mention a boundless curiosity, curbed only by your definition of wonderment!

Meeting point: Excavation will occur in between portions 18 and 15 or between portions 29A and 28, dependent upon weather. Wayfinding signs are available close to the entrances of the cemetery.

When: 9am to 3pm, Saturday 22 May 2021

Where: Toowong Cemetery, Frederick Street & Mount Coot-Tha Road, Toowong
