Community Archaeology, Sea Country and Climate Change: Using the Past to Prepare for the Future

  • Australian National University Canberra ACT 2601 Australia (map)

EVENT POSTPONED! We have had to postpone this event - our apologies for the inconvenience. We will post the rescheduled date as soon as possible.

Presented by the Australasian Institute for Maritime Archaeology.

Join us for a thought-provoking Q&A-style panel discussion exploring the pivotal role of community archaeology in unravelling the mysteries of Sea Country's past and navigating its future amidst climate change challenges. Delve into how community-led collaborative initiatives, such as those between the Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation (TAC) and the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Science (IMAS), and Gunai-Kurnai Land and Water Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) with Parks Victoria, are shaping our understanding of submerged landscapes and coastal archaeology. Discover how these partnerships contribute to deciphering past climate shifts and bolstering resilience against future environmental pressures. Gain insights into the innovative methodologies and findings that shed light on the impacts of sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and other climate events on Sea Country's archaeology.

Don't miss this opportunity to engage with Traditional Owners, experts and enthusiasts alike as we collaborate with Traditional Owners to care for Sea Country and maritime heritage, and safeguard it for generations to come.

Chaired by Steph Van Berkel and featuring a panel of Traditional Owners and industry professionals, this event will be held in hybrid form (in-person at the Australian National University and online) as part of National Archaeology Week.
