Exploring the Industrial Heritage of Jones Bay Wharf

  • Jones Bay Wharf 26-32 Pirrama Road Pyrmont NSW 2009 Australia (map)

Join industrial heritage expert and Artefact Principal Dr Iain Stuart on a specially curated guided tour of Jones Bay Wharf in Pyrmont.

Jones Bay Wharf was one of a number of finger wharfs constructed by the Sydney Harbour Trust as the Port of Sydney’s facilities struggled to cope with changes in technology and the need to expand the Port’s capacity. Originally designed to export wool and wheat, then used to process troops in the Second World War and later migrants to Australia, the wharf has many stories to tell.

Physical evidence of the wharf’s evolution is abundant including rail lines, cranes and gantries. Using these features as focal points, Iain will explain the fascinating history of the wharf’s industrial past while highlighting its importance in the development of Australia’s international trade.

The 1-hour tour includes archival imagery, original research, and plenty of opportunities to ask Iain questions about the wharf’s adaptive re-use from 1920 to present day.

Free, but registration required as the event is limited to 15 people.

Presented by Artefact Environment and Heritage as part of National Archaeology Week and the Australian Heritage Festival.
