Historic Artefacts for Field Archaeologists

  • 247-251 Flinders Lane Melbourne, VIC, 3004 Australia (map)

Presented by historic artefact specialist Bronwyn Woff (Artefrag Analysis), this half-day workshop on the use and usefulness of historic artefacts for on-site context dating will include discussion of broad field methods as well as hands on learning in identification of indicative datable artefact types.

Hosted in Naarm/Melbourne in advance of National Archaeology Week, the workshop will run for 2.5hrs, with two sessions starting at 10am and 2pm. Class size is restricted to ensure quality and access to hands on resources.

Assumed knowledge: The workshop is aimed at field archaeologists who already have a basic understanding of artefacts, including ceramic sub-materials and decoration techniques, and glass manufacturing techniques, and these will be assumed knowledge in terms of workshop content.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be included during the half way break, and a portion of the ticket price supports NFP organisation Ross House - supporting the social justice and environment movement in Melbourne. Participants can request to receive a certificate of completion, and assessment for the Australian Archaeology Skills Passport sign offs.

About the presenter: Bronwyn (she/her) is a freelance historic artefact specialist and archaeologist with 12 years experience working across east coast Australia. She is based in Naarm/Melbourne and specialises in historic artefact cataloguing and analysis, with particular interest in historic glass artefacts. She works under the business name Artefrag Analysis.
