The Sydney Historical Archaeology Practitioners’ (SHAP) Workshop is an opportunity for heritage practitioners from professional consultancies and Government to join students, academics and those with an interest in historical archaeology to gather and discuss advances in historical archaeology and interesting results from excavations undertaken over the last year across the wider Sydney area.
This year, SHAP will be hosted by Comber Consultants and the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry at the University of Sydney.
Archaeology of Resilience
Environmental, climatic and cultural changes have been changing and shaping our lives. The February 2022 floods, the worldwide outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), and the 2019-20 bushfires in New South Wales (NSW) have created unprecedented changes to us and the way we live.
The study of change and resilience is central to the discipline of archaeology. Archaeological sites with stratified materials have greater potential for revealing a chronology of past events, how people lived, used resources, adapted to environmental change in the past and the sequence of cultural and environmental change over time. Change is complex and can be presented and analysed in many different ways. SHAP 2022 explores how historical archaeologists describe, interpret, analyse and explain past changes and resilience.
