Presented in partnership with the Australian National Committee for Archaeology Teaching and Learning.
Education underpins the past, present and future of Australian archaeology. Without it, we are unable to train new generations of archaeologists and heritage advocates, nor are we able to engage a public, particularly through our schools, whose interest and support for the archaeological past is critical to ensuring its contemporary relevance. It is therefore surprising that archaeological education is not higher on our national disciplinary agenda.
This panel will bring together representatives from primary, secondary and tertiary education sectors, the cultural heritage industry and academic researchers. Focussing on the future of archaeological education in Australia, we will consider themes including how can we sustain engagement with primary and secondary teachers to ensure they receive the assistance they need to successfully implement Australian archaeology within their classrooms; how Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing can be better integrated into modern archaeological practice; and how we can ensure graduates are job ready and are well-prepared to positively contribute within the Australian heritage sector.
