EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN! Our apologies, please join in next year!
Friends of Toowong Cemetery, in conjunction with The University of Queensland School of Social Science, have been searching for buried headstones in the cemetery grounds since 2006. The annual archaeology dig is a chance to unearth Brisbane's history.
This year the excavation will target headstones that were buried in the 1930s as landfill within the Cemetery. These headstone originate from the North Brisbane Burial Grounds (under Suncorp Stadium), 1843-1875, that were removed prior to WWI and originally placed in a memorial reserve at Christchurch, Milton.
Come along and watch the dig, or join in - make sure you wear appropriate clothing, closed shoes, and gardening gloves. Tools and instruction will be provided, but please bring your own water and food.
If arriving by car, enter the Cemetery from the Richer Street gate. There will be signs in the Cemetery to direct visitors to the site.
This event is supported by Brisbane City Council.
When: Cancelled due to rain
Where: Toowong Cemetery, Toowong, Queensland - enter at the Richer Street entrance and follow the signs to the dig
