Michael Gray
Current position
Archaeologist (Student - Undergraduate), lithic analyst at Christine Williamson Heritage Consultants
Where did you study?
La Trobe University
How did you become interested in archaeology?
I actually began with an interest in history, and was studying that as my major, while doing the archaeology core classes along the way. After my first semester I discovered that archaeology better aligned with my interests and I pursued that instead.
What archaeological projects are you working on at the moment?
Currently I am working on an assemblage of lithic artefacts from Drysdale, in the Geelong area of Victoria.
Tell us about one of your most interesting archaeological discoveries.
I’m very new to the role, however while working on the lithic assemblages I have the opportunity to see the range of tools and raw materials that people worked with. The most interesting material to me is petrified wood.
Tell us about a funny / disastrous / amazing experience that you have had while doing archaeology
The funniest thing to happen to me was almost disastrous! While driving up to Port Macquarie for the ASHA conference we almost ran out of fuel, because of a slightly dodgy fuel gauge!
What’s your favourite part of being an archaeologist?
I have yet to go into the field, but hearing my co-worker’s stories about the interesting finds, and people that they get to work with, attending conferences and learning from the people there, seeing all the cool lithics that I am working on, and the various bones and historical artefacts that my co-workers show me!
