Rosalie Neve

Current Position

Aboriginal Heritage Planning Officer North East Branch Regional Operations Division NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.

Where did you study?

University of New England (Bachelor of Arts) and Flinders University (Graduate Certificate Cultural Heritage Management).

How did you become interested in archaeology?

I was motivated to consider studying archaeology instead of science by a presentation delivered by a local Aboriginal archaeologist.

What archaeological projects are you working on at the moment?

My work involves reviewing the Aboriginal cultural heritage assessments undertaken to suppprt planning proposals and development applications and providing advice to consent authorities. I also review applications for NSW Aboriginal heritage regulatory instruments when required.

Tell us about one of your most interesting archaeological discoveries.

My work doesn't involve making exciting archaeological finds myself but it does mean I often have the opportunity to review the exciting finds of others long before they are published.

Tell us about a funny/disastrous/amazing experience that you have had while doing archaeology.

I loved the experience of being involved in excavations in the Coorong in South Australia in 2008 because it was an amazing collaborative project developed and undertaken with the local Aboriginal knowledge holders.

What’s your favourite part of being an archaeologist?

My favourite part of being an archaeologist is working with Aboriginal knowledge holders to develop Aboriginal cultural heritage educational resources for all those who wish to learn more about the story of a specific place.
