Presented in partnership with the World Archaeological Congress 10.
A panel discussion presented by Claire Smith (Chair), Kellie Pollard (Indigenous Australia), Alfredo González-Ruibal (Spain), Bayo Folorunso (Nigeria), Koji Mizoguchi (Japan), Alok Kumar Kanungo (India), Hannah Cobb (UK), Karina Croucher (UK), Kasun S. Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka), Peter Stone (UK).
In the lead-up to the 10th World Archaeological Congress in Darwin (22–28 June 2025), this pre-conference panel brings together keynote speakers and conference organizers to explore the urgent and complex challenges facing our world today—climate change, conflict, discrimination, systemic injustice, and cultural erasure.
This discussion will consider how archaeology, as both a discipline and a practice, can respond to these crises with resilience, relevance, and responsibility. Panellists will reflect on the role of archaeological knowledge in promoting justice, equity, and sustainability, and preview some of the critical themes and debates that will shape the upcoming Congress. Join us as we consider how archaeology can transcend boundaries and contribute meaningfully to global change.
