Dive into a world where archaeology meets iron horses!
Join us for an enlightening event as we explore the fascinating intersection of archaeology and our beloved railway systems. Our panel of experts will share insights from recent archaeological investigations and heritage preservation projects, shedding light on the rich history that lies beneath our feet.
Kate Gray, Principal and Director, Lovell Chen
Kate will speak on the 19th century formation of the Victorian Railways, their importance to the state and how the recent rail infrastructure upgrades have been the most extensive and significant since the late 19th century. I’ve asked Kate if she can send through a title for her talk and brief abstract/outline.
Dr Michelle Negus Cleary, Technical Director – Archaeology & Heritage, Dr Vincent Clark Archaeology & Heritage
North Melbourne Locomotive Depot was the primary hub servicing the steam trains of the former Victorian Railways from the 1888 until it was demolished in 1965. It was also the largest building constructed in the southern hemisphere at one point and had one of the biggest workforces in the state. The building contained three large rail turntables and housed and refuelled over 200 steam engines. The site was constructed on reclaimed land of the former West Melbourne Swamp with an artificial Railway Coal Canal cut especially to service it. Recent excavations have provided archaeologists an opportunity to investigate the remains of this significant rail heritage site.
Dr Jarrad Paul, Historical Team Lead, Dr Vincent Clark Archaeology & Heritage
Jarrad will speak about recent archaeological sites and features associated with suburban rail infrastructure along Melbourne’s Belgrave and Lilydale Lines. These results highlight early level crossing technology with a well-preserved example of buried interlocking level crossing gates; as well as the buildings and housing that the railways had to provide for their staff such as Station Masters’ houses.
Whether you're a long-time train enthusiast or simply curious about local history, this event promises to be both informative and engaging.
