Australian Archaeology in Profile: Change and Stasis

The Australian Archaeological Association's Professional Development webinar series intends to provide all Association members with access to professional development and networking opportunities throughout the year. This second webinar will focus on the results of the Australian Archaeology in Profile survey, presented by Geraldine Mate and Sean Ulm. The survey results provide information about career paths, training and skills gaps, and employment conditions in Australian archaeology, and are relevant for anyone currently working in or considering pursuing archaeological work in Australia.
In 2020, the fourth Australian Archaeology in Profile was undertaken. This survey builds on data collected in surveys undertaken in 2005, 2010 and 2015 to provide information on current status and longitudinal trends in professional archaeology in Australia. Regularly accessed components of the survey include employment conditions, demographics of the profession and the analysis of professional skills and qualitative feedback about approaches to teaching and learning.
In this paper we present findings from the 2020 survey, and compare results to previous surveys, identifying longitudinal trends and changing needs for the profession. In particular, we explore the qualifications of professional Archaeologists in Australia, the teaching and learning, and professional development undertaken and the perceived ability and value of a range of skills.
