Presented by Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology Australasia.
To celebrate New Zealand Archaeology Week and Australia’s National Archaeology Week, CAA Australasia has organised a special online panel event with guests Dr. Andrew Yip, Dr. Katherine Thomas, and Andrew Wilkinson. PhD candidate Tom Keep will lead discussion with our three panellists each of whom specialise in a range of digital techniques in archaeology and cultural heritage. The panel will show you the varied career and research options available to digital archaeologists today, and how digital techniques are being used better to understand archaeological sites and landscapes in Australia and abroad, within commercial archaeology and on research excavations, and how digitisation can be used in museum contexts to enhance data visualisation. An open Q&A will follow the panel where you can ask our panellists about their studies, research, and careers, as well as any other burning digital archaeology questions you may have.
We welcome all to this panel discussion, which may be of particular interest to graduate and early career researchers.
About the panellists:
Dr Andrew Yip researches applications for immersive visualisation and experimental digital technologies to the preservation and interpretation of important cultural heritage sites, collections and museums. He is interested in how we can use new media platforms to create new, embodied sensory experiences that allow us to understand heritage in innovative ways. He is also interested in the mechanics of immersive design. His background is in art history and museums, and he work closely with the GLAM sector on digital conservation, exhibition design and interaction design projects.
Dr Katherine Thomas is an experienced heritage advisor and a GIS specialist within natural and cultural resource management. Skilled in GIS, surveying, GPR, photogrammetry, UAV flights, and legacy data management system consolidations she has also focused on technical skill sharing and equality through closing the gap, including teaching heritage planning and GIS within adult education, undergraduate, masters and community settings. Her PhD focused on GIS applications for archaeology, NRM, and Traditional Owners in the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area, NSW
Dr Andrew Wilkinson is an archaeologist with over 15 years’ experience in heritage work throughout Australia, Singapore, Malta, and Italy. He has worked on Aboriginal, historical, maritime, and classical sites where he has completed cultural heritage assessments, significance assessments and heritage management plans. He has experience in conducting maritime, terrestrial, and aerial remote sensing surveys, and has a strong interest in innovative technology, and in AR/VR/MR/XR development for exploring, educating, experiencing and reflecting.
Tom Keep is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, researching the use of virtual reality reconstruction as a means of investigating and promoting rural archaeological heritage. He is also employed by the Hellenic Museum to create a digitized catalogue of 3D models from their material collection using photogrammetric modelling.
