Divine Might: Natalie Haynes in Conversation

  • Chau Chak Wing Museum University Place Camperdown NSW 2500 Australia (map)

Event cancelled! Our apologies, due to unforeseen circumstances, this event has now been cancelled.

Join us at the Chau Chak Wing Museum for a very special event, and hear the renowned Classicist, comedian, author and broadcaster Natalie Haynes fresh from her sold-out appearances at the Sydney Writers Festival.

In this conversation she will be joined by Dr Anne Rogerson. Together they will explore Natalie's writing, the goddesses of ancient Greece and other myths and stories of the ancient Greek world.

Natalie will be available after the event for book signings.

About the speaker. Natalie Haynes was once described by the Washington Post as "a rock star mythologist". Her latest book Divine Might: Goddesses in Greek Myth was published late last year. In it she wittily explores Athena, Demeter and the other goddess, and turns the focus away from thousands of years of stories of the male gods to learn more about the divine women of Mount Olympus.

Natalie is also the author of fiction works The Amber Fury (2014), The Children of Jocasta (2017), A Thousand Ships (2019), which was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2020, and Stone Blind (2022). Pandora’s Jar, her 2020 non-fiction book about women in Greek Myth, was an international bestseller.

Natalie has also written and performed numerous series of her BBC Radio 4 show, Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics and in 2015 she was awarded the Classical Association Prize for her work in bringing Classics to a wider audience.

She read Classics at Christ's College, Cambridge, and was a member of Cambridge University Footlights Dramatic Club. She has performed five shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where in 2002 she was the first woman ever nominated for the Best Newcomer Award for the Perrier Comedy Awards.
